Who is a romantic safari for?

Anniversaries. Mark five, ten or twenty-five years with something you’ll talk about for the next twenty-five. We can arrange a private dinner on the right night and tell the camp what you’re celebrating.

Proposals. A sunset over the Serengeti makes a hard backdrop to say no to. We’ll work quietly with your guide and camp on the timing, the setting and keeping it a surprise. Tell us your plan on the enquiry form, and we won’t mention it in anything your partner might see.

Couples’ escapes. You don’t need an occasion. Many couples simply want a trip where the phones go quiet and the days are slow, beautiful and shared.

Romantic moments we can arrange

• Private bush breakfast: coffee and a cooked breakfast set up in the open after an early game drive.
• Sundowners on the kopjes: drinks on the granite outcrops of the Central Serengeti as the sun goes down.
• Lantern-lit bush dinner: a table for two away from the main camp, under the stars.
• Sunrise balloon flight: float over the plains at dawn, followed by a champagne breakfast.
• Star-gazing by the fire: remote camps with very little light pollution and a campfire to yourselves.
• A slower day: a late start, a long lunch and an afternoon by the pool between game drives.

Where we recommend for couples

The right camp makes or breaks a romantic safari. We look for small camps with spacious tents, private decks and staff who know how to make an occasion feel personal. Some of our favourites for couples:

• Asanja Moru, Central Serengeti: boutique luxury tents near the Moru Kopjes, with excellent big-cat country, kopje sundowners and private bush dining.
• Asanja Nyasirori, Western Serengeti: a secluded, design-led camp with a pool, ideal for a slower pace between drives.

Sample itinerary: 7-night romantic safari

Nights 1–2: Tarangire. Ease in with elephant herds and baobab landscapes, followed by a first sundowner together.

Night 3: Ngorongoro highlands. A full day exploring the crater floor, then a cosy lodge evening on the rim.

Nights 4–6: Central Serengeti. Private game drives in big-cat country. Add a balloon flight one morning and a bush dinner one evening.

Night 7: Western Serengeti or fly to Zanzibar. Finish slowly in the bush, or extend with three or four nights on the beach.

Every itinerary is fully tailored. Tell us your dates and we’ll suggest the best areas for that time of year.

When to go

• June to October: dry season with easier wildlife viewing. River crossings in the northern Serengeti are possible but never guaranteed.
• January to February: green landscapes and calving season in the southern Serengeti. A beautiful time for photographers.
• November to December: quieter in many areas, with fresh green after the short rains. Holiday weeks book up early.
• March to May: the long rains bring fewer visitors and lower rates. Some camps close, so ask us which are open.

Romantic safari FAQs

What makes a safari romantic rather than just a regular safari?

Mostly privacy and pace. You have your own vehicle and guide, smaller camps, and time built in for moments together rather than back-to-back driving.

Can you help me plan a surprise proposal?

Yes. Tell us your idea on the enquiry form and we’ll coordinate the setting, timing and camp staff discreetly.

How many nights do we need?

Five to seven nights on safari works well for most couples. Add three or four nights in Zanzibar for a beach finish.

Is a hot-air balloon safari worth it?

For many couples it’s the highlight of the trip. Flights run over the Serengeti at sunrise and need booking in advance.

Are romantic safaris only for honeymooners?

No. Most of our romantic safaris are for anniversaries, milestone birthdays, proposals or simply time away together.

Can we combine a romantic safari with Zanzibar?

Yes. Fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar for a few slow days by the Indian Ocean at the end of your trip.
