Calving Season Safari

Experience one of the most dramatic chapters of the Great Migration on a private calving season safari in Tanzania.
From approximately January to March, vast herds of wildebeest gather across the nutrient-rich short-grass plains of Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti. This is the period when large numbers of calves are born, creating extraordinary wildlife viewing and some of the most intense predator activity of the year.
BookMeAfrica creates private, tailor-made calving season safaris around your travel dates, placing you close to the herds and giving you the flexibility to spend more time where the wildlife activity is strongest.

When Is the Calving Season?

The calving season generally takes place from January to March, with February often considered the peak period.

The exact timing varies from year to year because rainfall and grazing conditions influence the movement of the migration herds.

January

Large concentrations of wildebeest begin gathering across the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains.

Fresh grazing supports pregnant females, and the first calves begin appearing.

February

February is typically the heart of the calving season.

Large numbers of calves may be born over a relatively short period, while predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas take advantage of the concentration of vulnerable young animals.

March

Calving activity continues and the young wildebeest become stronger.

The herds usually remain across the southern plains before beginning their gradual movement north as conditions change.

Where Does the Calving Season Take Place?

The main calving areas are around Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti, including parts of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The short-grass plains provide highly nutritious grazing, making this region particularly important for pregnant wildebeest and newborn calves.

For travellers visiting specifically for calving season, staying in or close to Ndutu is often one of the best ways to maximise time with the herds.

What Wildlife Can You See?

Although the wildebeest migration is the main attraction, calving season is also one of the best times for predator viewing.

Wildlife may include:

  • Wildebeest

  • Zebra

  • Gazelles

  • Lions

  • Cheetahs

  • Hyenas

  • Leopards

  • Jackals

  • Elephants

  • Giraffes

  • Buffalo

  • Numerous bird species

The abundance of young animals creates frequent predator-prey interactions, making this period especially rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

Why Is Calving Season So Special?

The calving season is different from the river-crossing period in the Northern Serengeti.

Instead of focusing on one dramatic crossing event, the Southern Serengeti offers days of continuous wildlife activity across vast open plains.

You may see newborn calves taking their first steps, large herds grazing together, cheetahs hunting across open terrain and lions moving through the migration.

The greener landscape also creates beautiful photographic conditions.

How Many Nights Should You Spend in Ndutu?

For a safari focused on the calving season, we generally recommend at least three nights in the Ndutu or Southern Serengeti region.

This gives you enough time to explore different areas and follow daily wildlife movements without rushing.

A complete Tanzania safari might be 6–10 nights, combining the calving season with destinations such as:

  • Central Serengeti

  • Ngorongoro Crater

  • Tarangire National Park

  • Lake Manyara

Private Calving Season Safaris

BookMeAfrica primarily creates private safari itineraries.

With your own vehicle and guide, your game drives can remain flexible.

If predator activity develops in one area, you can spend longer there. If the herds shift location, your guide can adjust the day accordingly.

This flexibility is especially valuable during calving season because wildlife movements can change quickly.

Where Will You Stay?

We recommend camps based on proximity to the migration and your preferred level of comfort.

For the calving season, staying close to Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti can significantly reduce unnecessary driving and give you more time on safari.

A property such as Ndutu Mobile Migration Camp can place you close to the seasonal migration action while still providing comfortable tented accommodation.

What Is Included?

Your calving season safari can typically include:

  • Airport and airstrip transfers

  • Full-board safari accommodation

  • Private 4×4 safari vehicle

  • Private game drives

  • English-speaking safari guide

  • National park and conservation fees

  • Itinerary planning and local support

Exact inclusions depend on the itinerary and accommodation selected.
