Why Visit Central Serengeti?
The Central Serengeti is one of the most reliable wildlife areas in Tanzania.
Unlike safari regions that are strongly dependent on seasonal migration movements, Central Serengeti supports large populations of resident wildlife throughout the year.
Its combination of grasslands, woodland, rivers and rocky kopjes creates habitat for predators and prey alike.
For travellers visiting Tanzania for the first time, Central Serengeti is often one of the best places to experience the classic Serengeti landscape and a wide variety of wildlife in a relatively compact area.
The Seronera Valley
The Seronera Valley lies at the heart of Central Serengeti and is one of the region’s most productive wildlife areas.
The Seronera River and surrounding river systems provide permanent water, attracting wildlife even during the drier months.
The area is particularly well known for:
Lions
Leopards
Cheetahs
Elephants
Giraffes
Buffalo
Hippos
Hyenas
Zebra
Wildebeest
Gazelles
Leopards are often associated with the riverine woodland, while lions can frequently be found around the open plains and kopjes.
Wildlife in Central Serengeti
Central Serengeti offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year.
Depending on the season and location, you may encounter:
Lions
Leopards
Cheetahs
Hyenas
Elephants
Giraffes
Buffalo
Wildebeest
Zebra
Gazelles
Hippos
Crocodiles
Jackals
Numerous antelope species
A wide variety of birdlife
The abundance of resident prey also supports one of the Serengeti’s strongest concentrations of predators.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Central Serengeti?
Central Serengeti can be visited throughout the year.
January to March
The main Great Migration herds are usually further south around Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti, but Central Serengeti continues to offer excellent resident wildlife and predator viewing.
April to May
The landscape becomes greener during the rainy period and visitor numbers can be lower. Migration herds may begin moving through parts of Central Serengeti as they travel north.
June to July
Wildlife viewing remains excellent as conditions become drier. Some migration herds may pass through or near the central region before moving towards the Western and Northern Serengeti.
August to October
The main migration herds are usually further north, but Central Serengeti remains one of the best areas for resident big cats and classic year-round Serengeti wildlife.
November to December
As the short rains arrive, wildlife disperses across greener landscapes and some migrating herds may move back through central areas on their journey south.
Can You See the Great Migration in Central Serengeti?
Yes, but Central Serengeti should not be marketed as a migration-only destination.
The migration herds may pass through or near the central region during parts of the year, particularly as they move north and later return south.
The real strength of Central Serengeti is its reliable year-round wildlife.
If witnessing a specific migration stage is your main priority, we may recommend combining Central Serengeti with:
Ndutu / Southern Serengeti for calving season
Western Serengeti / Grumeti during the western movement
Northern Serengeti / Kogatende for possible Mara River crossings
How Many Nights Do You Need?
We generally recommend three to four nights in Central Serengeti.
This allows time to explore different areas of the Seronera region without rushing and gives you multiple opportunities for wildlife sightings.
A wider Tanzania itinerary might combine Central Serengeti with:
Ngorongoro Crater
Tarangire National Park
Ndutu
Western Serengeti
Northern Serengeti
Private Central Serengeti Safaris
BookMeAfrica primarily creates private safari experiences.
Your vehicle and guide are dedicated to your group, giving you more control over the pace of your game drives.
You can spend longer watching a pride of lions, wait for a leopard to move from a tree, stop for photography or simply enjoy the landscape without following a group schedule.
